Chargeable weight is one of the most important concepts in air freight. A shipper may know the actual weight of a shipment but still receive a higher freight charge because the cargo occupies more aircraft space than its physical weight suggests. Understanding actual weight, volumetric weight and chargeable weight can make air-freight quotations much easier to compare.

Actual weight is simply the physical weight of the packed cargo. If a shipment weighs 80 kg on a scale, its gross weight may be 80 kg. However, airlines also need to account for the amount of space that cargo occupies. This is where volumetric weight becomes important.

Key Considerations

Volumetric weight is calculated from the package dimensions using a carrier-specific dimensional factor. A commonly used air-freight formula is length × width × height in centimeters divided by 6000. The exact divisor can vary by carrier, route and service, so the forwarder should confirm the applicable calculation before booking.

For example, suppose one carton measures 80 × 60 × 50 cm. Its volume is 240,000 cubic centimeters. Dividing by 6000 gives a volumetric weight of 40 kg. If the carton actually weighs 25 kg, the chargeable weight may be 40 kg because the cargo is relatively bulky.

Now consider the opposite situation. A compact carton may weigh 50 kg but have a volumetric weight of only 30 kg. In that case, the actual weight may determine the chargeable weight.

Practical Planning Tips

For multiple cartons, the calculation is performed for each package or according to the carrier's applicable rules. The total actual weight and total volumetric weight are then compared. The higher applicable figure becomes the chargeable basis in many air-freight services.

This is why accurate dimensions matter when requesting a quote. Saying “100 kg” is not enough if the shipment consists of large cartons. A forwarder may provide a preliminary quote based on estimated weight, but the final charge can change after the cargo is measured and weighed at the warehouse.

Packaging can also influence cost. If a supplier uses oversized cartons, excessive protective material or wooden frames, the volumetric weight may increase. For products that are strong enough, optimizing carton size can reduce freight cost without reducing protection.

Choosing the Right Logistics Solution

Shippers should ask suppliers for the final packed dimensions rather than product dimensions. The product itself may measure 50 × 40 × 30 cm, but the export carton could be 60 × 50 × 40 cm. The difference can be significant when shipping by air.

Another issue is the relationship between air freight and express shipping. Express carriers may use different dimensional factors and pricing structures. Therefore, a price from an express company should not be compared directly with a standard air-freight quote without checking the chargeable-weight formula and included services.

For door-to-door or DDP shipments, the quoted charge may include more than the international freight itself. Pickup, export clearance, destination clearance, duties, taxes and final delivery can all affect the final price. When comparing quotations, confirm whether the price is based on actual or volumetric weight and whether the quote includes the full delivery scope.

Chargeable weight is especially important for lightweight but bulky products such as furniture components, packaging materials, textiles, displays and certain plastic products. For dense cargo such as metal parts, the actual weight is more likely to dominate.
